It's 3:00pm in the afternoon on Sunday and I've been sitting on my couch since 10am working steadily to finish my last few posts about my goal for this course. I'm feeling a little brain dead at this moment but I want to get this finished by the end of today as I really need to focus on report cards this coming week. Here's how I did with my goals this week:
So, here's where the hitch comes in. We receive an email post about a change to the final module in our course. WHAT? I didn't plan for this!!! I've been really well prepared, I've been setting weekly goals, working on my monitoring progress sheet and planning out my time carefully. Then, all of a sudden, two weeks before the final course is finished, now we have additional tasks to do. I'm not going to sugar coat it, I'm a bit frustrated. This course has been planned for months and now there are two additional tasks and possibly one more on the way. So, I've had to re-adjust this week's plan in order to accommodate the new tasks. Which is why I've been sitting on my couch all day working and I feel like the finish line has just been moved out of my sight. So, now my updated plan for this week includes: 7. Write a final post about my own SRL learnings on my blog and answer the questions in Module 5. It's crunch time! I have reports due, a conference coming up that takes up a whole weekend and this course that is coming to an end. My plan is to meet with those students who are close to accomplishing their goals and see how I can best help them so that they can accomplish them soon. I'll also meet with those students who aren't that close to see what's blocking them. I'm going to create a goal reflection sheet and share it with students, have them fill it out and then post it on the blog. Finally, I'm going to create a reflection sheet about my own progress and post this on the blog. I'm hoping to get all that done this week so that I can use my weekend to work on my report cards. So, here's the final list of things to do this week:
My goals this week were:
I completed all goals that I set out this week. I actually wrote two blog posts. I had a wonderful conversation with Shona and Kim this morning, and I created and filled out my progress sheet. I'm attaching my monitoring progress sheet below. I also filled out my reflection sheet and created a blog post about it.
After reading another blogger's posts where they track their learning, I've begun doing that as well. This is keeping me focused on the deadlines of the course. I create a to-do list each week and then I reflect at the week's end. My goal itself is also progressing nicely. Because I've goal set with students before, this wasn't something completely foreign to me. This time around, I've just become more explicit with teaching and modeling the monitoring piece. I have students stop often to think about how their goal is progressing, and I've had students come up with their own monitoring plans.
Finally, I also asked my students to create a very similar reflection piece on their own goal. You can find that here. My goals this week are to:
This is stressful because that means that the next few weeks are really intensive with making sure I have all my marks in place and finishing up units. I also need to ensure that I have enough time to continue to reflect on goal progress with my students.
To pile it on even more, I've signed up for a Google Summit conference all weekend on November 19-20. So, I've really got to manage my time effectively over the next 4 weeks. Just thinking about this is making my head spin!! This weekend, I'm also going to write a to-do list with deadlines and dates for all this work to ensure that I can effectively complete everything by deadlines given. Wish me luck! My goals from this past week were to:
I got off to a strong start this week. I have a few preps on Monday and I find that I can get my teaching planned on Sundays so that I can give myself some time for coursework on Mondays. I find that I can't do both on the same day because it seems too overwhelming for me. My current work schedule is to complete course work on Saturdays, plan my week on Sundays, and then try to complete some posts and refine my weekly plan as the week goes on. 1. My group met on Monday night and it was such a great conversation. I'm finding that this course is a bit too secluded and that could be because everyone is at different stages of the course at different points. It's not leading to all that much discussion- just more posting, reading each others posts, commenting and moving on. We started chatting at 8pm and talked for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. We began the conversation by discussing the course and asking/answering questions that we had. One question that came up was the mid-course consultation. Up until this point, I've thought that this was optional. But both my group members completed the assignment which made me begin to worry that maybe just the actual consultation was optional and the assignment itself isn't. So, I hummed and hawed all week and finally emailed the professor for confirmation. If that's the case, then I'm going to need to re-adjust my plan! We had a great conversation and I'll post that on my blog related to my goal so please check that out. 2. I completed this on Monday and actually began to write another post about how students are reflecting on their blogs as well. I'm finding that I begin writing the posts in a Google Doc and then post once I get a chance to get photos and time to edit my post. I like to complete these posts at school because all the documents and evidence is there and I feel more focused while I'm at school. Another neat thing that is neat is that I was observed this week. I made a whole lesson plan about goal setting and taking the time to reflect on our goals. My principal loved it! She said that it was so great to see the students thinking about their own thinking. This is just what I want them doing so yay me! 3. I haven't yet completed the readings from module 4. After reading the course calendar that was sent out, I technically don't need to start module 4 until Monday so I'm going to add this goal to my plan for next week. Good morning! After reviewing some other blogs this weekend, I've decided to track my own learning progress alongside with the progress of my students. I meant to begin this yesterday but the day got away from me. Here is my plan for this week:
1. Meet tonight on Google Hangouts with my triad for module four. I need to still look at what problem I am going to bring to the meeting. 2. Create a blog post about goal setting in my classroom as we completed this last week. 3. Complete the readings from module #4 and begin to think about the monitoring process I will use. |
